What we check, what we don't, how long it takes.

Every Gogos tutor passes a background check before teaching a single session. We treat this like the legal process it is — minimum data, clear timeline, real appeal path.

Timeline

Four steps, usually done in 24 hours.

Most tutors clear within 1–3 business days. The longest delay is almost always the criminal-records lookup if you've lived in multiple states.

You upload one government ID
Driver's license, passport, or state ID. Takes 30 seconds.

We run automated checks
Identity match + criminal database query + sex-offender registry. Usually finishes in 24 hours.

A human reviewer signs off
Every result is double-checked by a Gogos Trust & Safety reviewer before we mark you cleared.

You're notified by email — pass or fail
Clear results: you can start the subject test. Failures: we explain what was flagged and your appeal options.
Common questions

The five we get most.

Do you do this every year?
We re-run identity verification + sex-offender registry annually. Full criminal record re-check happens every 3 years. We'll let you know 14 days before either runs.
What kinds of records disqualify me?
Any felony involving children, sexual offenses (regardless of severity), violent felonies in the last 7 years. Most other records are evaluated case-by-case.
I have a record — should I still apply?
Yes. Roughly 15% of cleared tutors have some kind of record. We look at recency, context, and the specific offense. Apply, and if there's an issue we'll explain it directly.
Who sees the result?
Our Trust & Safety team only. The result is stored as a pass/fail boolean in your file; the underlying records are not retained beyond the review period.
What if I think the result is wrong?
You can appeal. Email trust@gogosedu.com with your tutor ID; we'll re-review with the source records you provide. Appeals are decided within 5 business days.
